Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality, reinforced by a simple palette of black on white. Laurie Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, while selected artists’ notes shed light on how and why they choose to interpret this challenging subject.

Am very glad I bought this book.very inspirational and fun to look at and dream of my future projects.in addition i have another one of the books in the "500" series and it to is excellent and i plan on buying the others too.

Good value and a great present for ceramists and sculptors who are into careful observation and modeling, quirky anthropomorphism or reinterpreting earlier representations from many different cultural perspectives. This a terrific book with good quality photographs of the pieces and some interesting information on clay, temperatures,glazes etc. There are also some brief reflective comments from the artists.

It does not tell you how to make 500 things, however. More a coffee table book than a how-to, this offers inspiration and inspires admiration.

Certainly stimulates the imagination. Inspirational and fun. Really comprehensive collection of clay animals. This will be of great benefit to my classes.

Highly recommended for it's wide range of treatments in both designs and glazes. I love this book and use it often for inspiration. This is actually my second copy, the first got damaged and I couldn't be without it.
